This illustration depicts steps in a laparoscopic surgery to excise a malignant tumor from a kidney, a procedure known as a partial nephrectomy. What makes this particular variation of the procedure so interesting is the use of a Habib device, a 4-pronged cauterizing instrument that creates a zone of bloodless tissue around the tumor. This does away with the need to clamp the major blood vessels going to and from the kidney reducing the chance of damaging healthy tissue.
Modeled and rendered in ZBrush with additional layout in Photoshop.
